The gift of discernment is a unique and crucial spiritual ability, also referred to as the “discernment of spirits” or “distinguishing between spirits.”
The term “Spirits” refers to the essence, intent, or true meaning behind actions, claims, or actions.
This transcends the material, diving deep into the profound, often unseen elements that guide and influence our lives, yet the majority are unaware of its existence.
Spiritual discernment observes the underlying truth and core intention shadowing an action, word, or any other sensually observable activity.
The essence of events is split into dividing all surface-level exterior masks or tapestry, bringing the mind into subjection and organically reaching the deeper, more significant realities, often misunderstood or ignored by society.

Diakrisis = Discerning of Spirits

“To another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to ***distinguish between spirits, to another various ….” — 1 Corinthians 12:10
The Greek term “diakrisis” refers to the innate ability to distinguish, evaluate, or pass judgment on individuals, statements, situations, or environments.
It encapsulates the essence of discernment, allowing one to draw fine distinctions and make informed decisions based on careful analysis and understanding, thereby ensuring accurate interpretation and response to varying circumstances.
Greek Philosophy
In Greek philosophy, “diakrisis” is the process of discernment or discrimination, employed to differentiate truths from falsehoods, or to distinguish subtleties within complex arguments and concepts.
It was known as an intellectual ability to separate ideas, recognize theirstics, and understand their interrelations.
Diakrisis captures a critical thinking expertise, which promotes in:
- Deconstructing nuanced arguments
- Appraising their validity, and
- Deciding between competing ideas or theories with detachment and objective deduction.
Solid food is for the mature, who have trained their senses to distinguish good from evil through constant practice. — Hebrews 5:14
Discernment is Perfect
This ability is conferred to the Christian by the Holy Spirit’s vision to distinguish clearly between the influences of God’s Truth vs human beliefs, Satan's anger vs Godly wrath, the world’s karma vs God’s tests, and the human flesh vs Holy Spirit — within any given circumstance, without human effort Discernemnt Works in and through Faith.
This gift safeguards us from being misguided by erroneous doctrines.
The Material Realm is NOT substantial
We may be swayed and tricked in the material realm of inversion and deception but in the Spirit, we are locked in, as we have become slaves of Christ, the seed that must be planted in death is our flesh, therefore the flesh is not perfected, through its imperfect dwindling and rotting away our soul is perfected in the Spirit.

Acts 5:3–6 recounts the story of Peter discerning Ananias’s deception. In this account, Peter exercises the gift of discernment, unveiling Ananias’ lie about the sale of a piece of property.
In Acts 16:16–18, Paul expels a spirit of divination from a slave girl. Paul’s discernment allows him to recognize the unholy spirit influencing the girl, and he responds by commanding the spirit to leave her.
1 John 4:1 advises believers not to believe every spirit, but to test them to see whether they are from God. This is an explicit call for the use of discernment to safeguard against false prophets and teachings.
