Understanding Narcissism
Narcissism, a personality disorder that affects an increasingly significant number of individuals (the number rises yearly), is characterized by:
- An excessive preoccupation with oneself … Whether or not the focus is positive or negative is of no importance… the important thing is that the focus remains on them… Always!)
- A deep-seated need for admiration (usually passive aggressive) recognition and attention. Although they likely would never admit it, as they are driven by their Subconscious Mind…
Narcissism Origins
Narcissus The Greek Myth
The term originates from Greek mythology, where Narcissus, who seo never knew his true reflection, saw his distorted image for the first time.
Prior narcissus had been pursued by the Nymph named Echo, he despised Echo.
Narcissus avoided ECHO at all costs…
When he saw his distorted reflection in a pool of water, he couldn’t stop admiring the false image he saw, he fell in love with it.
Individuals with narcissistic traits often display an inflated sense of self-importance…
(Key word: DISPLAY- this means they act, they do not attain or possess genuine senses of self-esteem, and they hate themselves.)
They lie to themselves to believe they are superior to others, they can’t bear facing their true sense of inferiority.
Constant Need For Validation
They constantly seek validation and praise while simultaneously disregarding their feelings and devaluing the needs of those around them.
Selfish Manifestations
This self-centeredness can manifest in various ways, such as:
- An overwhelming desire for success and recognition or…
- A constant need to be the center of attention.
Moreover, narcissists' main characteristic is they lack empathy and struggle to form genuine connections with others, both of which they were not taught during their formative years.
They often exploit or defraud others for personal gain (financial gain, personal gain, and even Ego gain.)
They manipulate situations to maintain their false image.
Developmental Factors And Influences Over Narcissism
Narcissism has long intrigued researchers seeking to understand its origins.
Recent studies suggest that narcissism may emerge during childhood and adolescence due to a combination of developmental factors and environmental influences.
One key factor is early attachment experiences.
Insecure attachment styles, such as ambivalent or avoidant attachment, have been linked to the development of narcissistic traits.
Inconsistent & Unstable Caregivers
Children who grow up with inconsistent caregiving or experience neglect may internalize feelings of worthlessness and develop compensatory narcissistic tendencies.
Overindulgent or permissive parenting can foster a sense of entitlement in children, while overly critical or neglectful parenting can lead to an increased need for validation.
